Malcolm Crowe。 Not Every Gift is a Blessing",而这不是blessing的gift又是什么呢?cursing! 由一个儿童默默孤独的承受,陪伴他的只有玩具大兵和圣像,而他的大兵替他向主呼喊“De profundus clamo adite domine”(Out of the depths, I cry to you o Lord。

“I think I can go now. I just needed to do a couple of things. I needed to help someone. I think I did. And I needed to tell you something. You were never second. Ever. I love you. You sleep now. Everything will be different in the morning. ... Good night, sweetheart.”

From the deepth, I cry to u  my Lord.

象我们骨髓中对缨粟的渴望一样: u  know why people afraid when they r alone?

These trivial stories are not published by the mass media, yet they are all examples of admirable human spirit and emotion. We would appreciate it greatly if these stories could be forwarded to your friends, who may only know the death toll of these earthquakes. The predicted death toll is up to 50,000. It is a great tragedy, but everyone lost to us are not just mere numbers. They are lives, they are places that we have walked in, people we have talked to, air that we have breathed. We are connected by blood. They are not just numbers. We hope to let more people know more about this period of struggle, beyond the death toll and financial damage. If these stories touch you, we hope you could respond in some way. It may be humanitarian aid in any way, or letting your friends and family know these stories, or simply just appreciating loved ones and letting them know you care. My dear friends, we thank you for your time and support, and hope that these beautiful souls in heaven, and the determined survivors have touched you. Thank you. A Farewell to Ice

In 1818, the farmers who ranged cattles on the steep mountainside above Brig, a small southern town in Switzerland, organized a religious procession to deter a looming catastrophe. The 16-mile glacier Aletsch, the largest glacier in Alps,  with its center more than 3,000 feets deep, was fed by the endless snowing of Aletschhorn, Jungfrau, Munch and adjacent peaks. Through more than a century of unusually cold weather, glaciers throughout Europe were advancing, and Aletsch was threatening to overwhelm the farmers' summer cottages and pastures. Priests led the way to the glacier's snout where they planted tall wooden cross and prayed for divine intervention. The march to the glacier evolved into an annual rite. Finally, around 1865, the force of nature complied, cold spell ended and Aletsch began to retreat.

Nowadays, in an ironic turnabout, some residents in Brig and other Alpine communities are praying for Aletsch to come back. The ice has melted back more than a mile away from the spot where the cross was planted, it has lost 600 feet of thickness in many places, and is still shrinking 11 feet a year.

This feed lot in in California can accommodate up to 100,000 head of cattle.

Global warming has been called humankind’s “greatest challenge” and the world’s most grave environmental threat.1 The scientific community says that there is no doubt that global warming is real and that humans are largely to blame. Human activities are emitting vast amounts of “greenhouse gases” that prevent heat from escaping from the Earth’s atmosphere. Scientists report that this phenomenon will increasingly lead to catastrophic natural disasters, such as more frequent and intense droughts, floods, and hurricanes; rising sea levels; and more disease outbreaks. Scientists also warn that global warming threatens the lives of millions of humans and countless other animals. Many conscientious people are trying to help reduce global warming by driving more fuel-efficient cars and using energy-saving light bulbs. Although this helps, science shows that going vegetarian is perhaps the most effective way to fight global warming.

In a groundbreaking 2006 report, the United Nations (U.N.) said that raising animals for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combined. Senior U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization official Henning Steinfeld reported that the meat industry is “one of the most significant contributors to today’s most serious environmental problems.”2

Carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide together cause the vast majority of global warming. Raising animals for food is one of the largest sources of carbon dioxide and the single largest source of both methane and nitrous oxide emissions.

Carbon Dioxide: The burning of fossil fuels (such as oil and gasoline) releases carbon dioxide, the primary gas responsible for global warming. Producing one calorie of animal protein requires more than 10 times as much fossil fuel input—releasing more than 10 times as much carbon dioxide—than does a calorie of plant protein.3 Feeding massive amounts of grain and water to farmed animals and then killing them and processing, transporting, and storing their flesh is extremely energy-intensive. In addition, enormous amounts of carbon dioxide stored in trees are released during the destruction of vast acres of forest to provide pastureland and to grow crops for farmed animals. On top of this, animal manure also releases large quantities of carbon dioxide.

You could exchange your “regular” car for a hybrid Toyota Prius and, by doing so, prevent about 1 ton of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere each year, but according to the University of Chicago, being vegan is more effective in the fight against global warming; a vegan prevents approximately 1.5 fewer tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere each year than a meat-eater does.4 The math is simple: You could spend more than $20,000 on a Prius and still emit 50 percent more carbon dioxide than you would if you just gave up eating meat and other animal products.

Methane: The billions of chickens, turkeys, pigs, and cows who are crammed into factory farms each year in the U.S. produce enormous amounts of methane, both during digestion and from the acres of cesspools filled with feces that they excrete. Scientists report that every pound of methane is more than 20 times as effective as carbon dioxide is at trapping heat in our atmosphere.5 The Environmental Protection Agency shows that animal agriculture is the single largest source of methane emissions in the U.S.6

Nitrous Oxide: Nitrous oxide is about 300 times more potent as a global warming gas than carbon dioxide. According to the U.N., the meat, egg, and dairy industries account for a staggering 65 percent of worldwide nitrous oxide emissions.7

Fight Global Warming by Going Vegetarian

NASA climate scientists report new data. This week, NASA climatologists said that new data suggests that the Arctic Ocean may have no more ice by 2012. Jay Zwally, of NASA’s climate change research team, said that the ice was melting "much faster than previous predictions" supposed. He explained that the presence of the Arctic sea ice reflects about 80% of the sun’s heat, stabilizing the temperature of the ocean. Top NASA climatologist James Hansen stated, "We have not passed a point of no return. We can still roll things back in time – but it is going to require a quick turn in direction."

As per a UN report one of the leading causes of global warming is as follows:

In a groundbreaking 2006 report, the United Nations (U.N.) said that raising animals for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combined . Senior U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization official Henning Steinfeld reported that the meat industry is "one of the most significant contributors to today’s most serious environmental problems ."2

      http://www.goveg.com/environment-globalwarming.asp

Last year researchers at the University of Chicago took the Prius down a peg when they turned their attention to another gas guzzling consumer purchase . They noted that feeding animals for meat, dairy, and egg production requires growing some ten times as much crops as we’d need if we just ate pasta primavera, faux chicken nuggets, and other plant foods. On top of that, we have to transport the animals to slaughterhouses, slaughter them, refrigerate their carcasses, and distribute their flesh all across the country. Producing a calorie of meat protein means burning more than ten times as much fossil fuels--and spewing more than ten times as much heat-trapping carbon dioxide--as does a calorie of plant protein. The researchers found that, when it’s all added up, the average American does more to reduce global warming emissions by going vegetarian than by switching to a Prius.

It’s a little hard to take in when thinking of a small chick hatching from her fragile egg. How can an animal, so seemingly insignificant against the vastness of the earth, give off so much greenhouse gas as to change the global climate? The answer is in their sheer numbers. The United States alone slaughters more than 10 billion land animals every year , all to sustain a meat-ravenous culture that can barely conceive of a time not long ago when "a chicken in every pot" was considered a luxury. Land animals raised for food make up a staggering 20% of the entire land animal biomass of the earth. We are eating our planet to death.

You Can Help Stop Global Warming!
The most powerful step that we can take as individuals to avert global warming is to stop eating meat, eggs, and dairy products.

    Israel, Palestine, Crab Cakes

Israel has chosen to lure tourists for its 60th anniversary next year with a photo of an Israeli “cowboy” on a Golan Heights ranch, which hardly seems the ad campaign of a country about to trade land for peace.

I don’t want to despair although Ehud Olmert, the Israeli prime minister, is beset by criminal investigations, and President Bush is forlorn, and the only man who makes both these leaders look powerful is the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, who controls only the West Bank wing of his national movement.

“First, what is the border of Israel? And what happens to Jerusalem? And what happens to Palestinian refugees in the camps?”

Perhaps the Saudis, under heavy U.S. pressure, will show up, although they are so risk-averse and have staked so much on Palestinian unity, I doubt King Abdullah will. Perhaps the Syrians will ignore Golan cowboy ads and appear, but I wonder. Perhaps fear of Iran will lead Sunni Arab states to show public support for Israel. Perhaps.

What matters are the two peoples. But even basic principles are problematic. One core demand of Olmert and his foreign minister, Tzipi Livni, is for up-front Palestinian recognition of Israel “as a Jewish state.” But Saeb Erekat, a moderate Palestinian negotiator, has said that “Palestinians will never acknowledge Israel’s Jewish identity.”

     Rendition, Torture and Accountability

Maher Arar, a Syrian-born Canadian, was stopped at Kennedy Airport in 2002 while returning from a family vacation. After being held in solitary confinement in a Brooklyn detention center and interrogated without proper access to a lawyer, he was spirited off to Syria. He was tortured there for months before officials decided that their suspicions that he was a member of Al Qaeda were mistaken and let him go.

At a court hearing this month, a Justice Department lawyer argued against reinstating Mr. Arar’s lawsuit. The government contends that he should have appealed his order of removal to Syria, and claims that the Constitution does not apply to noncitizens who suffer injury abroad. This is a particularly nervy tack, given the ample precedent to the contrary and the fact that the administration first denied Mr. Arar’s access to a lawyer and then sent him to the country where he was tortured.

Canada’s response to Mr. Arar’s nightmare has been very different. After conducting an extensive investigation, the government offered him millions of dollars in compensation and an apology for having told United States agents that Mr. Arar was suspected, wrongly, of being an extremist. Pressed at a recent Congressional hearing, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice conceded that the United States had mishandled the case but refused to apologize.

Cockroaches Respond to Peer Pressure, Study Suggests

Many a mother has said, with a sigh, “If your friends jumped off a cliff, would you jump, too?”

The answer, for cockroaches at least, may well be yes. Researchers using robotic roaches were able to convince real cockroaches to do things that their instincts told them were not the best idea.

When the four robo-roaches were reprogrammed to prefer the lighter disk, however, the real roaches followed them about 60 percent of the time, in essence deferring their own judgment to the popular preference. (The other 40 percent of the time, the robotic roaches succumbed to peer pressure and headed for the darkest place.)

The scientists plan to extend their research to higher animals. The next creation: a robo-chicken, which will look a little like a ball on tank treads with loudspeakers. Newly hatched chicks will bond to the robot as if it were their mother. The researchers said they hope to explore the interplay of collective behavior among the chicks with the leadership of the false mother.

From Ants to People, an Instinct to Swarm

Americans spend a 3.7 billion hours a year in congested traffic. But you will never see ants stuck in gridlock.

By studying army ants — as well as birds, fish, locusts and other swarming animals — Dr. Couzin and his colleagues are starting to discover simple rules that allow swarms to work so well. Those rules allow thousands of relatively simple animals to form a collective brain able to make decisions and move like a single organism.

Dr. Couzin analyzed how the ants behaved when he tweaked their behavior. If the ants turned away too quickly from oncoming insects, they lost the scent of their trail. If they did not turn fast enough, they ground to a halt and forced ants behind them to slow down. Dr. Couzin found that a narrow range of behavior allowed ants to move as a group as quickly as possible.

In Africa, Accusation of Witchcraft Leads to Abuse

Domingos Pedro was only 12 years old when his father died. The passing was sudden; the cause was a mystery to doctors. But not to Domingos’s relatives.

They gathered that afternoon in Domingos’s mud-clay house, he said, seized him and bound his legs with rope. They tossed the rope over the house’s rafters and hoisted him up until he was suspended headfirst over the hard dirt floor. Then they told him they would cut the rope if he did not confess to murdering his father.

“They were yelling, ‘Witch! Witch!’” Domingos recalled, tears rolling down his face. “There were so many people all shouting at me at the same time.”

Terrified, Domingos told them what they wanted to hear, but his relatives were not appeased. Ferraz Bulio, the neighborhood’s traditional leader, said seven or eight captors were dragging Domingos down a dirt path to the river, apparently to drown him, when he intervened.

“They were slapping him and punching him,” he said. “This is the way people react toward someone accused of witchcraft. There are lots of such cases.”

It is a common belief in Angola’s dominant Bantu culture that witches can communicate with the world of the dead and usurp or “eat” the life force of others, bringing their victims misfortune, illness and death. Adult witches are said to bewitch children by giving them food, then forcing them to reciprocate by sacrificing a family member.

“The witches situation started when fathers became unable to care for the children,” said Ana Silva, who is in charge of child protection for the children’s institute. “So they started seeking any justification to expel them from the family.”

Two recent cases horrified officials there. In June, Ms. Silva said, a Luanda mother blinded her 14-year-old daughter with bleach to try to rid her of evil visions. In August, a father injected battery acid into his 12-year-old son’s stomach because he feared the boy was a witch, she said.

...a child accused of witchcraft was stabbed to death in 2000...

Stem Cells Taken From Cloned Monkey Embryos

Researchers in Oregon are reporting today that they used cloning to produce early monkey embryos and then extracted stem cells from those embryos.

...but the method, the researchers say, should also work in humans.

But groups that oppose human cloning and the destruction of human embryos to extract stem cells say the report makes it more urgent than ever to draw a moral line.

“I certainly think that this represents a new threshold in the entire discussion,” said the Rev. Tad Pacholczyk, director of education at the National Catholic Bioethics Center. “At this point, it becomes essential to ask a question as a society: Are there ever going to be circumstances where it is morally justifiable to clone human beings?”

Dr. Mitalipov said his group’s next project would be to use its new method to try to create cloned monkeys that carry genes for human diseases. The researchers would add human disease genes to adult skin cells before starting the cloning process. The result would be cloned monkeys that had the human disease gene in every one of their cells. Scientists could study those monkeys to understand the causes and treatment of the disease.

“We hope to model every known human disease,” Dr. Mitalipov said.

    http://www.tianyablog.com/blogger/post_show.asp?BlogID=493651&PostID=7270240
